WATCH: Career-long 57-yard FG wins game for A&M K commit Davis

Ask Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher about the keys to victory, and he’ll speak about three — and not two — facets of the game. Fisher will mention his team winning the day on offense, defense and special teams.

Following Thursday’s win against Northwestern State, Fisher, during his opening remarks of his postgame interview, spoke positively about all three facets of the game. And when it came to the Aggies’ kicking game, he commented about “a great 52-yard field goal” by Daniel LaCamera. As the head coach, Fisher refused to let special teams be an afterthought.

On Friday, Caden Davis gave Fisher something else to smile about regarding Texas A&M special teams. Davis, the 3-star kicker from Coppell (Texas) High School, set the bar high for Texas high school kickers by draining a 57-yard field goal with no time on the clock to give Coppell a 30-28 win at home against Sachse (Texas) High School.

The kick, in addition to winning the game, was a career long for Davis, a Texas A&M commit since Nov. 13, 2017.

“This is what every kicker dreams of,” Davis said. “All that I could think of was this being a chance for redemption for last season.”

Davis, a 6-foot-2, 186-pound kicker, can now say he’s exorcised the demon of the agony he felt last year. As a junior, Davis only missed two extra-point attempts all season. One of those came during a Class 6A regional semifinal, as Coppell fell to Round Rock (Texas) Cedar Ridge High School, 35-34, in overtime. Davis missed the extra point that would have tied the game and sent it into a second overtime.

Friday’s booming kick was the perfect way for Davis to remind everyone — and Texas A&M fans — that he can be a major asset.

“The feeling of making a 57-yarder to win the game is unimaginable,” Davis said. “It feels like you’re on top of the world.”

Along with the game-winning field goal, Davis also made field goals from 42 and 29 yards out, respectively. Coppell only scored nine points in the second half; Davis was responsible for all of them.

Last season, Davis was the Special Teams MVP of his district, connecting on 15 of 21 field goals and 63 of 65 extra points. His career long entering Friday was 51 yards.

In 2016, he made 15 of 20 fields and all 51 of his extra-point attempts. Davis was named a second-team MaxPreps Sophomore All-American that year, as well as an all-state honorable mention.

Davis is ranked the nation’s No. 4 kicker in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports. Recruited by defensive ends coach Terry Price, Davis has remained with his Texas A&M for nearly a year despite getting offers from TCU and Cornell, as well as major interest from Arkansas.
