US Open 2018: Aussie wrap up day five: Ash Barty through to fourth round in career-best performance

Australia’s Ash Barty is through to the fourth round of the 2018
US Open after defeating Karolina Muchova 6-3 6-4 in her third round
match.

The 17th seed was dominant from start to finish, and despite a
small hiccup when serving for the match, Barty looks in ominous
form heading into the round of 16.

The Aussie had the chance to finish the match against Muchova
when up 5-2 and 40-15 in the second set, but ended up being
broken.

Her opponent held serve to bring the score to 5-3, but Barty
quickly raced to 40-0 in her own service game to set up another
three match points.

Muchova won the next two points, leaving all Australian fans
becoming a tad nervous, but a vicious forehand from Barty led to
her winning the point, game and match.

It’s the first time that the 22-year-old has made it to the
fourth round of a Grand Slam in her 17 attempts.

Barty had previously made the third round of last year’s US
Open, Wimbledon this year, and the Australian Open in back-to-back
years in 2017 and 2018.

She will now face either eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova or
American Sofia Kenin in her first ever match in the second week of
a Grand Slam.

Barty was the only Aussie to take the court on day five, with
Nick Kyrgios, John Millman and Alex de Minaur set to play on Sunday
(AEST).

In other US Open news, the Williams sisters did battle for the
30th time on Saturday morning.

Serena earned bragging rights over Venus Williams as the 23-time
grand slam champion dispatched her older sister in straight sets to
reach the fourth round.

The contest marked the earliest the pair have clashed at a slam
since their first professional encounter at the 1998 Australian
Open.

Venus beat her 16-year-old sister in straight sets that day in
Melbourne, Australia but the seven-time major winner was no match
for her younger sibling at Flushing Meadows, where Serena prevailed
6-1, 6-2.

John McAfee’s ‘unhackable’ Bitfi wallet got hacked — again

If the security community could tell you just one thing, it’s that “nothing is unhackable.” Except John McAfee’s cryptocurrency wallet, which was only unhackable until it wasn’t — twice. Security researchers have now developed a second attack, which they say can obtain all the stored funds from an unmodified Bitfi wallet. The Android-powered $120 wallet relies on a user-generated secret phrase and a “salt” value — like a phone number — to cryptographically scramble the secret phrase. The idea is that the two unique values ensure that your funds remain secure. But the researchers say that the secret phrase and salt can be extracted, allowing private keys to be generated and the funds stolen. Using this “cold boot attack,” it’s possible to steal funds even when a Bitfi wallet is switched off. Aussie teenager Alex de Minaur put in a heroic performance against Marin Cilic in the third round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows. The world number 45 never stopped running in a five-set thriller that ended at 2:23am local time.
