Johnathan Thurston receives standing ovation in touching NRL farewell from CBUS Super Stadium crowd

Johnathan Thurston, take a bow.

The retiring NRL hero savoured his last moments in first grade
with a touching farewell that sent shivers down your spine.

The sell-out crowd were on their feet to celebrate the
illustrious career of one of the game’s great servants as he led
his team out of the tunnel for the final time.

All his teammates ran out donning his famous Cowboys-coloured
headgear on to mimic their skipper.

Melbourne skipper and long-standing friend Cameron Smith was
there to meet him with a handshake along with his wife Samantha,
three children and parents.

Even Gavin Badger slapped him up with brotherly hi-five while
his Titans rivals gave him a warm farewell at the kick-off.

But it was the crowd who sent him off in the most stylish
fashion.

During the seventh minute, fans from both sides rose to their
feet for a one-minute standing ovation in remembrance of his jersey
number.

Titans fullback AJ Brimson managed to spoil the party with a
ripping individual try in the same minute, delaying the crowd’s
pre-planned tribute.

There appeared to be more Cowboys jerseys than Titans jumpers in
CBUS Super Stadium’s highest crowd of the year with a load of
Townsville locals making the trek down.
