Johnathan Thurston absolutely flattens Ryan James with inspiring hit in NRL farewell

A shoulder reconstruction may have played a part in his
retirement, but it still can’t stop Johnathan Thurston from lining
up his opposition.

In one of his last ever highlights, the maestro number seven
reminded Titans skipper Ryan James that he was still the boss with
a bruising tackle that forced him to drop his lollies.

Packing less than 20 kilograms than his opposite captain,
Thurston managed to flip James on his back with force in a textbook
tackle that inspired North Queensland’s first points.

farewell from CBUS Super Stadium crowd

On the back of the error, the Cowboys stormed down the field and
an unlikely hero in Shaun Fensom crossed over for their opening try
to put them in striking distance of the high-flying Titans.

The game wasn’t going to script for Thurston’s retiring party
with Gold Coast fullback AJ Brimson spoiling his standing ovation
with a brilliant individual try.

The thrilling attacking Gold Coast spectacle continued with
tries to Kane Elgey and Mitch Rein, taking an 18-6 lead into the
sheds to put them in good stead to send Thurston out a loser.

But the sell-out crowd only saw Thurston as a true champion,
sending him off in style with a special tribute in the seventh
minute after an emotional walk-out through the tunnel where he was
greeted by Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith and his family.

Thurston’s teammates lifted in his final game in Townsville last
week to avoid the wooden spoon, but the energy and relentlessness
had disappeared as the Titans turned up for the occasion.
