LIVE BLOG: Philippines vs Syria (2018 Asian Games, classification phase)

Image
Finishing fifth in the 2018 Asian Games may not be the ideal ending the Philippines men’s national basketball team had hoped for, but it’s the best one coach Yeng Guiao and his crew can achieve now. The Filipinos play Syria on Friday night, with a win accomplishing that objective. Guiao and co. have already surpassed the country’s seventh-place ranking in the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea, but a victory to end their campaign in these Games would be a perfect parting gift to Cleveland Cavaliers guard Jordan Clarkson. Game time is at 7:30 p.m., Manila time. For more sports coverage, visit the ABS-CBN Sports website . Man accused of stealing teen’s MAGA hat indicted by grand jury

Image
A grand jury has indicted a Texas man who was arrested in July for allegedly stealing a teen’s “Make America Great Again” hat before throwing a drink in his face at a Whataburger restaurant — an incident that went viral and caught the attention of the Trump family. Kino Jimenez, 30, was charged with theft of person. He could serve time in state jail if convicted, Houston’s  KHOU-TV reported. Jimenez was accused of stealing 16-year-old Hunter Richard’s cap on July 3. The teen captured a video of Jimenez criticizing him for supporting President Trump as he sat in the San Antonio restaurant with friends. “You ain’t supporting s—, n—-!” a man identified as Jimenez is heard saying on camera  after tossing a large drink  in the direction of the teen filming the video. He then walks away with the hat while muttering “b—- a– motherf——” as one of the other teens sitting at the table appears stunned. Authorities identified Jimenez from the video and arrested him at his home July 6 on a war

Coca-Cola to buy UK coffee chain Costa for $5.1 billion

Image
Coca-Cola has agreed to buy coffee chain Costa for $5.1 billion including debt to extend its push into healthier drinks and take on the likes of Starbucks and Nestle in the booming global coffee market. The purchase from Britain’s Whitbread of Costa’s almost 4,000 outlets thrusts the world’s biggest soda company into one of the few bright spots in the sluggish packaged food and drinks sector. Paying about 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) more than some analysts had expected, Coke will use its distribution network to supercharge Costa’s expansion as it chases current coffee chain market leader Starbucks and its almost 29,000 stores across 77 markets. Beyond coffee shops, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, himself a Briton who is familiar with the Costa brand, said Costa would provide an important growth platform ranging from beans to bottled drinks in what is one of the world’s fastest-growing drink categories, growing 6 percent. “Coca-Cola doesn’t have a broad, global portfolio in thi

Leading cardiologist slams professor who claimed coconut oil is POISON

Image
A Harvard professor who claimed coconut oil is poison has today been slammed as talking ‘unscientific nonsense’ by a furious cardiologist. Professor Karin Michels, who also heads the tumour research center at the University of Freiburg in Germany , made the controversial statement last month. She described the oil as ‘one of the worst foods you can eat’ – and said even lard is healthier, despite being abundant in saturated fat. But Dr Aseem Malhotra, an avid supporter of saturated fats and founder of the campaign group Action on Sugar, said her comments were bringing the prestigious Harvard University into ‘disrepute’. In a scathing video recorded for MailOnline, the NHS cardiologist, who used to work at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, called on her to apologise for her ‘entirely false’ claim and to retract it. Dr Aseem Malhotra is an avid supporter of saturated fats, which he thinks have been wrongly demonised since the 1970s Sales of coconut oil have risen six-fold

Omarosa’s memoir is reportedly tanking

Image
Omarosa Manigault Newman could probably use a few tweets from President Trump right about now. The former reality star-turned-White House senior adviser has reportedly seen a dramatic dip in book sales since her Aug. 14 release of “Unhinged,”  which recounts her brief time as a staffer . According to the Washington Post , hardcover sales dropped by more than 40 percent after the first week — when she managed to sell 34,000 copies following a Trump Twitter tirade. “When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn’t work out,”  the president tweeted . “Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!” In her book, Manigault Newman accuses Trump of showing a “real and serious” mental decline, among other things. The former “Apprentice” star took advantage of the president’s free publicity — appearing in a slew of television interviews and even releasing secret tapes of conversations she recorded in the White House. Trouble for Trump: Disapproval at a high, 63% back Mueller, half favor impeachment

Image
Disapproval of Donald Trump is at a new high, support for the Mueller investigation is broad and half of Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll favor Congress initiating impeachment proceedings against the president. Sixty percent in the national survey disapprove of Trump’s performance in office, numerically the highest of his presidency, albeit by a single point; that includes 53 percent who disapprove strongly, more than half for the first time. Thirty-six percent approve, matching his low. See PDF for full results, charts and tables. The results come a week after Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was convicted of fraud, and his former longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to eight felonies, including illegal campaign finance actions that he said Trump directed. Trump’s average approval rating since taking office is the lowest for any president in modern polling since the 1940s. One factor: Contrary to his “drain the swamp” rhetoric

Sixers fans can breathe a sigh of relief after reported Ben Simmons-Kendall Jenner breakup

The Eagles may have won the Super Bowl, but some things will never change — like the fans’ love affair with the wide receiver position. Long gone are the days when folks clamored “the Eagles should trade Lito Sheppard and a third-round pick for Anquan Boldin” every offseason and trade deadline for the better part of a decade. (Seriously, this was a thing that people thought could actually happen, the updated version being “Mychal Kendricks and a third for Brandin Cooks” in 2017.) Still, this affliction presents every time any name receiver is even possibly available, no matter how remote the odds are he’s coming here. It doesn’t matter how many receivers the Eagles have. It doesn’t matter how much money it will cost or whether the club has the cap space. It doesn’t even matter if it’s a good receiver, or somebody who’s washed up. Which brings us to Dez Bryant. One of the most dominant receivers in the NFL for a brief period, Bryant is without a team. Saturday will be September. The

How much caffeine and sugar is in some of the UK’s most popular energy drinks?

Image
Children in England are to be banned from buying energy drinks under Government plans . Youngsters in the UK reportedly consume more of the high-caffeine, sugar-loaded drinks than other children in Europe and the habit is harming their health and education, ministers fear. Here is a look at the caffeine and sugar content of some of the leading energy drink brands in the UK. Monster original – 500ml can Monster Energy has one of the highest caffeine and sugar levels of the drinks surveyed, with 160mg of caffeine in a 500ml can – roughly four times as much as a shot of Espresso. The drink also has the equivalence of 13 teaspoons of sugar. Relentless energy drink also had the same amount of caffeine in a single 500ml can but contains six teaspoons of sugar, which is more than half an adult’s recommended daily amount. Red Bull may give you wings but it might also give you a sugar rush too. Even in a smaller 250ml can, the drink still contains almost seven teaspoons of sug

Instacart is now available to 70 percent of U.S. households

Image
Toward the end of 2017, Instacart penned a partnership with one of the country’s biggest grocery retailers, Kroger. At the time, it was a smaller deal with one of Kroger’s chains called Ralphs. But today Instacart is expanding its partnership with Kroger, bringing Instacart delivery to 75 additional Kroger markets, growing Instacart’s Kroger footprint by 50 percent nationwide. The expansion will be completed by late October, bringing Instacart delivery to more than 1,600 Kroger stores. This builds on Instacart’s momentum, following partnership deals with chains like Albertsons, Aldi, Sam’s Club, and Loblaw. In all, Instacart is now available to 70 percent of all households across the country. Last year, the company announced its goal to reach 80 percent of U.S. households by the end of 2018, and its most recent funding round seems to be propelling the startup to achieve that goal. In February, Instacart raised $200 million led by Coatue Management, as well as Glade Brook Capi

Whitbread to sell Costa coffee chain to Coca-Cola for £3.9bn

Image
Leisure group Whitbread has agreed to sell the UK’s biggest coffee chain Costa to Coca-Cola for £3.9bn. Whitbread acquired Costa in 1995 for £19m when it had 39 shops. It now has more than 2,400 outlets and is embarking on an overseas expansion. The leisure group, which owns the Premier Inn hotel business, had been under pressure from shareholders to demerge and list the coffee chain as a separate company. Chief executive Alison Brittain said: “This transaction is great news for shareholders as it recognises the strategic value we have developed in the Costa brand and its international growth potential and accelerates the realisation of value for shareholders in cash.” Activist investor Elliott Advisors became Whitbread’s largest shareholder in April and called for a demerger on the grounds it could potentially value the separated firms at a combined £10bn as opposed to the current £7.7bn within the Whitbread stable. “This is a bitter sweet moment for Whitbread investors,” said

Trump: We Will Not Tolerate Censorship, Blacklisting, Rigged Search from Big Tech

Image
President Donald Trump vowed to stand for free speech on Thursday, warning Big Tech against censoring conservative voices. “I’ve made it clear that we as a country cannot tolerate political censorship, blacklisting, and rigged search results,” Trump said, calling out social media companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. The president commented on the issue at his campaign rally in Indiana on Thursday night, ahead of the midterm elections in November. Trump said his administration would always stand up for free speech for “all Americans,” warning the left that their own voices could someday be censored. “We will not let large corporations silence conservative voices,” he said. Trump suggested that such activities were un-American, reiterating the principle of free speech. “We’re not going to let them control what we can and cannot see, read, and learn from, we can’t do that,” Trump said. “America is a free country and we’re going to stay always a free country.” Shared from:

Natalie Wood’s screams heard on night she vanished from yacht, witness claims

A woman claimed in a podcast interview Friday that she heard a woman crying for help around the same time when it is believed Hollywood starlet Natalie Wood disappeared from Robert Wagner’s yacht. Marilyn Wayne told the producers of “Fatal Voyage: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood” she “heard screams from a woman yelling for help.” Wayne said in a 2011 statement she had been sleeping on a boat in the harbor with her son and a businessman when she heard the screams. “Well, my son had a digital watch that we had just given him so that’s how we kept the time, minute by minute. I was up on the deck and heard a woman yelling, ‘Help me, somebody please help me, I’m drowning,’” she said. iOS 12 Users Running Current Beta Plagued With Popup Prompting an Update

Image
iPhone and iPad users who have installed the current iOS 12 beta are being plagued with a continual popup that suggests a new iOS update is available when it’s not. Affected users are seeing the following message: “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 12 beta.” The problem is users receiving this message are running the most recent version of iOS and there is no additional software to update to. Beta testers have been seeing this popup since the latest beta was released on August 27, but over the course of the last day, the popups have become much more frequent. Many users are now seeing the popup every time an iPhone or iPad running the beta is unlocked, and it is a popup that must be manually dismissed each and every time before an iOS device can be accessed. Developer Guilherme Rambo has suggested that an error in the latest update causes the iOS beta to think that its expiration date is imminent, leading to the popup problem. It looks like this me

Alan Walker & Lay’s ‘Sheep Relift’ Video: Exclusive

Image
Alan Walker  and  Lay  have debuted an explosive new audio-visual, premiering exclusively via Billboard  Dance  today (Aug. 30). The Norwegian producer worked for months with the Chinese superstar, perfecting a new sound for both entertainers. Lay got his start in South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO. “Sheep” debuted on Lay’s breakout solo album  Lay 02 Sheep,  originally with a wonkier electro-pop sound. The Walker “Relift” is darker with a cinematic trap edge. Lay recorded new vocals for the cut, which Walker premiered at Lollapalooza in Chicago earlier this month. The “Sheep Relift” video plants Lay firmly in the surreal dystopia of Walker’s “World Of Walker,” a sci-fi storyline that started with his “Tired” video. Walker’s traditional bounce-step beat rings through the stormy melody. It’s a bold sound from both the Eastern and Western stars, definitely a cool meeting of the minds. The “Sheep Relift” video is out in full Friday, Aug. 31, but you can enjoy it below one day early.

Leak reveals a new Apple Watch Series 4 with an edge-to-edge display

Image
In addition to a leak showing off photos of the new iPhone XS models, 9to5Mac also got a hold of a photo of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 4. The new Watch, which now sports an edge-to-edge display, is expected to be revealed on September 12, at the just-announced Apple press conference , along with the iPhone XS. The photos of the forthcoming Apple Watch (which 9to5Mac notes are “not a render”) show off a watch that’s clearly different from the existing editions. The display now stretches to the edge of the watch face, confirming earlier rumors that said Apple was planning to give the Apple Watch its first big redesign since its launch in 2015. Analysts have been  predicting  the new watch would sport a 15% larger display, offer extended battery life, and include upgraded health monitoring features. Donald Trump: NBC ‘caught fudging’ taped interview about James Comey

Image
CLOSE A timeline of events that led up to President Donald Trump abruptly firing FBI Director James Comey in the midst of the agency’s investigation into whether Trump’s presidential campaign was connected to Russian meddling in the election. (May 10) AP President Donald Trump accused NBC News of altering the tape of an interview during which he cited the Russia investigation as a reason for why he fired James Comey as FBI director. In a series of tweets Thursday morning, the president railed against the media and took aim at NBC, seeming to accuse the network of “fudging” an interview he gave last year,  just days after he abruptly fired James Comey as FBI director. Trump offered no proof of the claim.  “What’s going on at @CNN is happening, to different degrees, at other networks – with @NBCNews being the worst,” the president tweeted. “The good news is that Andy Lack(y) is about to be fired(?) for incompetence, and much worse. John McAfee’s ‘unhackable’ Bitfi wallet got hacked — again

Image
If the security community could tell you just one thing, it’s that “nothing is unhackable.” Except John McAfee’s cryptocurrency wallet, which was only unhackable until it wasn’t — twice. Security researchers have now developed a second attack, which they say can obtain all the stored funds from an unmodified Bitfi wallet. The Android-powered $120 wallet relies on a user-generated secret phrase and a “salt” value — like a phone number — to cryptographically scramble the secret phrase. The idea is that the two unique values ensure that your funds remain secure. But the researchers say that the secret phrase and salt can be extracted, allowing private keys to be generated and the funds stolen. Using this “cold boot attack,” it’s possible to steal funds even when a Bitfi wallet is switched off. There’s a video below. on a completely unrelated note, here is a @Bitfi6 being cold boot attacked. it turns out that rooting the device does not wipe RAM clean. who would have thought it!?

San Francisco Grants 2 Scooter Permits (but Not to the Early Disrupters)

Image
A statement from Bird said, “While we are disappointed with today’s decision, we hope to have the opportunity to meet the needs of S.F. residents and to help the city achieve its transportation goals following this initial test period.” The company noted that it had run a campaign that resulted in 30,000 emails to city officials expressing their support for Bird. “Today’s decision is disappointing,” said Toby Sun, Lime’s chief executive. “San Franciscans deserve an equitable and transparent process when it comes to transportation and mobility. Instead, the S.F.M.T.A. has selected inexperienced scooter operators that plan to learn on the job, at the expense of the public good.” The San Francisco transportation agency did not respond to a request for comment. Skip and Scoot will be permitted to operate 625 scooters each in the city. The city can double the number in the future.
